[I have a good friend with a birthday today, prompting some thoughts.]

“In both races, those who lived within the redneck culture lagged far behind those who did not.” -Thomas Sowell
“In both races, those who lived within the redneck culture lagged far behind those who did not.” -Thomas Sowell
[Mr. Sowell is referring here to blacks and whites of the Southern United States. But, it is true of anyone who adopts those cultural hallmarks.]

“In Paradise, everyone speaks the truth. That is what makes it Paradise.” -Jordan Peterson
“In Paradise, everyone speaks the truth. That is what makes it Paradise.” -Jordan Peterson
[Or at least, one of the things that makes it paradise. I suspect there may be others.]

Quote of the Day: 24 February 2021 #QotD

“To be clear, it’s totally okay to feed garbage to a pig. It is America, after all. And who doesn’t love the idea of garbage-fed pork? But we get many of our laws from people doing dumb, gross, and dangerous things. So the feds were forced to make it a federal crime to feed garbage to swine unless it has been cooked to a boil first.” -Mike Chase

So the feds were forced to make it a federal crime to feed garbage to swine unless it has been cooked to a boil first.” -Mike Chase
[I cannot fathom the series of events that led to this becoming a federal crime. I can certainly see how it would be beneficial to go pruning the law (at least at the federal level) to reduce inanity.]

Quote of the Day: 23 February 2021 #QotD

“Let children have their own preferences.” -Pamela Paul & Maria Russo
“Let children have their own preferences.” -Pamela Paul & Maria Russo
[If they don't begin at a young age to exercise their own agency, how can we trust them to do so when they become adults? We expect people to practice every other skill, but seem to want to impose our own desires on our children.]

“Stories are the vehicles for imparting the most important truths we know.” -Sarah Mackenzie
“Stories are the vehicles for imparting the most important truths we know.” -Sarah Mackenzie

[And, because humans are story seeking beings, they will imprint on our consciousness in ways that other methods of conveying information do not. For good or ill, and with truth or falsity.]

“When you solve problems at the results level, you only solve them temporarily. In order to improve for good, you need to solve problems at the systems level.” -James Clear
“When you solve problems at the results level, you only solve them temporarily. In order to improve for good, you need to solve problems at the systems level.” -James Clear
[It is somewhat surprising to me, but probably shouldn't be, that leftist are so vocal about systemic problems, and yet want to address with with results level 'solutions'.]

“Live a life that is yours. Don’t seek the approval of the doubters.” -Brenden Burchard
“Live a life that is yours. Don’t seek the approval of the doubters.” -Brenden Burchard
[This is proving to be more difficult for me than I would like to admit to myself. But I will press forward trying to ignore what others think of me.]

“The number of people who stand ready to consume one’s time, to no purpose, is almost countless.” -Booker T. Washington
“The number of people who stand ready to consume one’s time, to no purpose, is almost countless.” -Booker T. Washington
[I find that these people are often oblivious to the fact that they are time wasters. They truly believe their concerns are your own.]

Quote of the Day: 17 February 2021 #QotD

“If we fail to provide boys with pro-social models of the transition to adulthood, they will construct their own, which may not be so positive and constructive.” -Leonard Sax
“If we fail to provide boys with pro-social models of the transition to adulthood, they will construct their own, which may not be so positive and constructive.” -Leonard Sax
[And yet, the most vocal group insistent on changing how boys are raised are concerned with destroying what they call toxic masculinity (which seems to be all masculinity) rather than on emphasizing virtuous masculinity.]

“You can't stop someone from wanting to be mad.” -@politicalmath
“You can't stop someone from wanting to be mad.” -@politicalmath
[I've experienced this. Even with people I agreed with. It caused hurt feelings, and nasty remarks that served to useful purpose. The wounds inflicted appear to still be sore spots today.]

“The government has no business telling you how many people can be in your home.” -@TRHLofficial
“The government has no business telling you how many people can be in your home.” -@TRHLofficial
[It seems the pandemic is more an excuse to exercise control rather than the genuine emergency we have been, and continue to be, told it is.]

“Safety starts with knowing that your intuition about people is a brilliant guardian.” -Gavin de Becker
“Safety starts with knowing that your intuition about people is a brilliant guardian.” -Gavin de Becker
[The penalty for not trusting your intuition when it is correct is far greater than the penalty for trusting it when it is not.]

Quote of the Day: 12 February 2021 #QotD

“Why do you go away? So that you can come back. So that you can see the place you came from with new eyes and extra colors. And the people there see you differently, too. Coming back to where you started is not the same as never leaving.” -Terry Pratchett
“Why do you go away? So that you can come back. So that you can see the place you came from with new eyes and extra colors. And the people there see you differently, too. Coming back to where you started is not the same as never leaving.” -Terry Pratchett

[I'm returning home from possibly the longest vacation I've ever been on today, and certainly the longest in the past two decades. It will be very nice to get home.]

[I think this is only partially true, but only because our standards for frivolity have fallen.]

“[T]he brain is such an enormous mass of interconnecting wires and nerves that it probably cannot be analyzed in a straightforward manner.” -Richard Feynman
“[T]he brain is such an enormous mass of interconnecting wires and nerves that it probably cannot be analyzed in a straightforward manner.” -Richard Feynman
[I think our knowledge of the brain has progressed to the point that we know this to be true rather than just supposing it is.]

Quote of the Day: 9 February 2021 #QotD

“Sooner or later—and perhaps sooner than many of us expect—an ever bigger government would destroy both the prosperity that we owe to the free market and the human freedom proclaimed so eloquently in the Declaration of Independence.” -Milton Friedman
“Sooner or later—and perhaps sooner than many of us expect—an ever bigger government would destroy both the prosperity that we owe to the free market and the human freedom proclaimed so eloquently in the Declaration of Independence.” -Milton Friedman
[We will lose everything that makes us unique in the world to more we embrace collectivism and large government.]

“The secret of a great success for which you are at a loss to account is a crime that has never been found out, because it was properly executed.” -Honoré de Balzac
[I'm not sure which part of this applies to the "win" of the presidency by Biden, not being able to account for it or the crime having been properly executed.]

“If we don’t want our president acting like a king we need to start taking back the legislative powers that allow him to do so.” -Mike Lee

[This was originally written when Trump was president, and it is even more necessary now that Biden has assumed the office.]

“[S]ystematic international studies of corruption have found that most of the countries rated as most corrupt were among the poorest countries, even when they had rich natural resources.” -Thomas Sowell
“[S]ystematic international studies of corruption have found that most of the countries rated as most corrupt were among the poorest countries, even when they had rich natural resources.” -Thomas Sowell

[So, what can we do to reduce corruption? I wish I knew.]
