Quote of the Day: 29 April 2019

“Jumping to conclusions is efficient if the conclusions are likely to be correct and the costs of an occasional mistake acceptable, and if the jump saves much time and effort. Jumping to conclusions is risky when the situation is unfamiliar, the stakes are high, and there is no time to collect more information.” -Daniel Kahneman

Forest Grove Police Log excerpt, 24 April 2019

The selection from the log of local police activity for this week is about the police just being good.
April 13Officers received a call that a dog had become impaled on a fence in a residential area. Officers assisted in extracting the pup and attended to the injuries; the dog was transported to an emergency vet.
Sometimes, you just have to highlight the good.

Forest Grove Police Log excerpt, 17 April 2019

The selection from the log of local police activity this week is about an exuberant enjoyment of a lovely day.
April 9
A caller reported that a man was excessively whistling at his residence, possibly directly at the caller. Officers contacted the man who explained he was enjoying a beautiful spring day.
I was unaware there was such a thing as excessive whistling. But now that I think about it, it is not so strange. I don't always enjoy other people's whistling, though I'm fond of doing it myself from time to time. Gratefully, I was not involved in this incident,

Forest Grove Police Log excerpt, 10 April 2019

The selection from the log of local police activity for this week is about how if you're going to do something to get police attention, it should be for a good reason.
April 4
Police contacted a group of teenagers who were seen pushing a shopping cart and yelling at passing traffic along Pacific Avenue. A short investigation revealed that the youths were actually shouting at a friend to get out of traffic.
So, good for those teenagers for trying to do a good thing. Maybe not the best way of doing it, but what do you expect of teenagers?

Detail from a Book of Hours

Forest Grove Police Log excerpt, 3 April 2019

This week's selection from the log of local police activity is a case of a criminal who called the cops on himself.
March 22
A man reported that he was being harassed by a person he sold a car to. After a chat with the man, officers learned the man sold the vehicle without actually possessing the title. He was advised of the numerous laws he violated and encouraged to speak with the buyer to resolve the issue.
So, if you commit a crime, and are subsequently harassed by one of the victims, it's probably not the best idea to call the police. But, if you do, this is likely the best result you can ask for.
