“You do not have a right to make me pretend to agree with you.” -Sarah Hoyt
“You do not have a right to make me pretend to agree with you.” -Sarah Hoyt
[Not that that has ever stopped them before, or will now. But it will give you the courage to stand up to them if you realize it.]

“Your enemy has some say in when the fight ends. Be prepared to act accordingly.” -J. Kb
“Your enemy has some say in when the fight ends. Be prepared to act accordingly.” -J. Kb
[This is true whether the fight is physical (as in the case that led to the discussion where this quote originated), emotional, intellectual, political, or any other means of combat. Keeping this in mind is a good idea.]

[Do the work, get jobs done, and you're sure to have additional opportunities.]

“The standard of living of a nation depends more on its output per capita than on the money received as income for producing that output.” -Thomas Sowell

[Inflation will throw a wrench into the works though, as it unevenly distributes itself through the population.]

“What makes power dangerous is how it’s used.” -BrenĂ© Brown
“What makes power dangerous is how it’s used.” -BrenĂ© Brown
[That is why it is so important to maintain a government of limited powers, and to preserve the constitutional protections against the unlawful uses of power.]

Quote of the Day: 22 January 2022 #QotD

“Since the beginning of man, God has taught of an absolute respect for human life. From the very first moment of his being until the last breath of his life, there is a veneration for life which includes those in being, but not yet born.” -James E. Faust

[A firm belief of mine. And why I cannot condone abortion, especially in cases where it is used as a way to address unwanted pregnancies after they have occurred.]

Quote of the Day: 21 January 2022 #QotD

“When people say things such as, ‘Speaking as a white man,’ or ‘Speaking as a woman of color,’ that’s impossible. One can only speak for one’s self.” -Kate Murphy
“When people say things such as, ‘Speaking as a white man,’ or ‘Speaking as a woman of color,’ that’s impossible. One can only speak for one’s self.” -Kate Murphy
[But so many either forget this or intentionally overlook it for their own benefit.]

“I believe that armed self-defense is an extension of the Christian’s mandate to protect the innocent, to ‘watch over widows and orphans in their distress.’” -Kevin Creighton
“I believe that armed self-defense is an extension of the Christian’s mandate to protect the innocent, to ‘watch over widows and orphans in their distress.’” -Kevin Creighton

[I don't need a religious justification for my right of self-defense. But I do like knowing that my actions are in accordance with my theology.]

Quote of the Day: 19 January 2022 #QotD

“[T]he world of risk to our children is not a flat world whose edges are within view, but a round one with horizons we cannot easily see beyond.” -Gavin de Becker
“[T]he world of risk to our children is not a flat world whose edges are within view, but a round one with horizons we cannot easily see beyond.” -Gavin de Becker
[Something to keep in mind these days as you have vast hordes of folks trying to tell you what risks you should be concerned with. Ultimately, only you can make the determination of which risks are worth addressing.]

Quote of the Day: 18 January 2022 #QotD

“We’re always disappointed when we find out someone else has human limits, the same as we do.” -Harry Dresden, _Small Favor_
“We’re always disappointed when we find out someone else has human limits, the same as we do.” -Harry Dresden, Small Favor
[We want to think other people are not like us. Especially those we look up to. We want them to be better so badly that we let ourselves believe they aren't subject to human frailties like everyone else is.]

Quote of the Day: 17 January 2022 #QotD

“[M]ere connection with what is known as a superior race will not permanently carry an individual forward unless he has individual worth, and mere connection with what is regarded as an inferior race will not finally hold an individual back if he possesses intrinsic, individual merit.” -Booker T. Washington

Quote of the Day: 16 Day 2022 #QotD

“We live in a modern world filled with great knowledge and much prowess. Nonetheless, these things too often camouflage the unsteady foundation upon which they are built. Consequently, they do not lead to real truth and on toward God and the power to receive revelation, acquire spiritual knowledge, and develop faith in Jesus Christ that leads to salvation.” -Christoffel Golden

“People with a mission to save the earth want the earth to seem worse than it is so their mission will look more important.” -P. J. O’Rourke
“People with a mission to save the earth want the earth to seem worse than it is so their mission will look more important.” -P. J. O’Rourke
[Really, anyone on a 'crusade' of some kind wants their problem to seem worse than it is, and doesn't have a large incentive to see it resolved unless they care more about the actual problem than their own influence. Sadly, influence is addictive and corrupting.]

[And we ignore this fact to our peril.]

“It’s counterintuitive, but if getting people to like you more is the goal, then just ask them to do you a favor.” -Brenden Burchard
[I've heard this idea presented by enough people of differing backgrounds that I expect it is true.]

[And what level of similarity is used to determine alikeness?]

Quote of the Day: 10 January 2022 #QotD

“Redistribution of income is not redistribution of human capital. On the contrary, such redistribution of income not only reduces the incentives, of lagging groups especially, to develop human capital, it can also reduce the incentives of more advanced groups to develop and apply their human capital to the fullest, when the rewards for doing so are reduced by confiscatory policies that transfer a substantial share of their rewards to others.” -Thomas Sowell

Quote of the Day: 9 January 2022 #QotD

“Isn’t it curious that loving ourselves seems to come less easily than loving others? Yet the Lord has said, ‘Love thy neighbour as thyself.’ He values the divinity within us, and so must we.” -Ronald A. Rasband

Quote of the Day: 7 January 2022 #QotD

“[I]t doesn’t matter how long you have known or how well you think you know people; if you stop listening, you will eventually lose your grasp of who they are and how to relate to them.” -Kate Murphy
“[I]t doesn’t matter how long you have known or how well you think you know people; if you stop listening, you will eventually lose your grasp of who they are and how to relate to them.” -Kate Murphy
[There has been a lot of people who have stopped listening. If you find yourself in that situation, take some care to reconnect with the people you love. Or you'll find that one or both of you let that love die before too long.]

Quote of the Day: 6 January 2022 #QotD

“Interrogation and trial are merely judicial corroboration. They cannot alter your fate, which was previously decided. If it is necessary to shoot you, then you will be shot even if you are altogether innocent. If it is necessary to acquit you, then no matter how guilty you are you will be cleared and acquitted.” -Mironenko, an interrogator

If it is necessary to shoot you, then you will be shot even if you are altogether innocent. If it is necessary to acquit you, then no matter how guilty you are you will be cleared and acquitted.” -Mironenko, an interrogator
[From Solzhenitsyn's seminal Gulag Archipeligo, this quote from a Soviet interrogator seems apt considering the political imprisonment of several people over a supposed insurrection that was either nothing of the sort, or never going to accomplish the purported aims and doomed to failure from the start. It does make one think about where we are as a country if these kinds of things are going on here today.]

Quote of the Day: 5 January 2022 #QotD

“Benjamin was the oldest animal on the farm, and the worst tempered. He seldom talked, and when he did, it was usually to make some cynical remark—for instance, he would say that God had given him a tail to keep the flies off, but that he would sooner have had no tail and no flies.” -George Orwell

[Older people are bristly; likely because they've had experience and can see the probably results of our current follies. Not every cynic is correct, but a cynic is more likely to have some insight into what is going on that the optimist is.]

“When we fix the wrong thing for the wrong reason, the same problems continue to surface.”
“When we fix the wrong thing for the wrong reason, the same problems continue to surface.” -BrenĂ© Brown

“It’s a tradition. Were traditions rational, they’d be procedures.” -Francis Grimm, _The Aeronaut’s Windlass_
“It’s a tradition. Were traditions rational, they’d be procedures.” -Francis Grimm, The Aeronaut’s Windlass
[We do a lot of silly things in the name of tradition. Mostly harmless things, but sometimes harmful ones. It's time we rooted some of those out of our culture.]

Quote of the Day: 1 January 2022 #QotD

“It may be of little importance to determine at any time just where we are, but it is of the utmost importance to determine whither we are going. Set the course aright and time must bring mankind to the ultimate goal.” -Calvin Coolidge
“It may be of little importance to determine at any time just where we are, but it is of the utmost importance to determine whither we are going. Set the course aright and time must bring mankind to the ultimate goal.” -Calvin Coolidge
[As it is true of society, so it is of the individual.]
