Clearly our modern conception of limbo has drifted far from its ancient origins. Once upon a time a banner rather than a pole was used. I assume this changed because of the difficulty in keeping the banner correctly oriented. It is also now necessary to go under the bar by leaning backwards, but in this image we see the participant going forward.
